JAKARTA - Five Indonesian students elected as delegates to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2010, of a program under the auspices of the Society for Science & the Public.
The five students, comprised of Afrizal, Wafiakmal Miftah, Fachry Lutfi Muhammad, Mohammad Alam Pandi, and Jayu Pramudya, is a finalist of the Scientific Work Youth Competition, held in the year 2009 by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, to conduct research projects in the social sciences category, engineering and nature. They will travel to the Intel ISEF 2010 in May, pre-college science exhibition in the world's largest, will be held in San Jose, California, United States (U.S.).
Indonesian Institute of Sciences has organized Youth Science Competition Works since 1969. Changes in competition format was started this year, marked by the participation of Indonesia in the Intel ISEF. Participants will first submit a proposal, and then work on their project after the proposal is approved.
"Education is increasingly recognized as a major factor for the level of competitiveness and success of a country. And the research is one way to provide appropriate skills and knowledge to students. Through the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, we at the Ministry of Research and Technology provides the skills and knowledge as early as possible. Thanks to the collaboration between Intel LIPI and Indonesia, I believe the students will be equipped with the ability to compete on a global level, "said Drs. Suharna Surapranata, MT, Minister of Research and Technology, Republic of Indonesia.
More than 1500 students from 51 countries will share ideas, showcase research and advanced discovery, and racing to get almost $ 4 million in scholarships and awards. Three winners will be awarded scholarships each amounting USD50.000 from Intel Foundation. High school students who participate in Intel ISEF is the inventor of the future. Projects that are contested will answer a variety of scientific problems is the current global challenges like climate change, cancer, alternative fuel, driver safety, and starvation.
The finalists Intel International Science and Engineering Fair was chosen in each year of the race which has 550 affiliates worldwide. Each competitor can send a maximum of two individual projects and one project group to the Intel ISEF. In Indonesia, Intel worked with Indonesian Institute of Sciences, through the Scientific Work Youth Competition (LKIR) held each year. The Indonesian delegation to the Intel ISEF is the winner of LKIR.
"Cultivating local talent to be able to compete at the global level is part of Intel's commitment in encouraging the growth of the country. In Indonesia, we did it through cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, who runs a scientific competition at the national level. Delegation of Indonesia to the Intel ISEF is the finalist from Scientific Work Youth race, "said Budi Wahyu Jati, Country Manager, Intel Indonesia.
Intel's commitment to education includes more than this program. In the last ten years alone, Intel has invested more than USD1 billion, and its employees have donated more than 2.5 million hours to improve education in 50 countries. In the month of October 2008, Intel launched a $ 120 million for the next ten years for the Society for Science & the Public to continue support for the Intel Science Talent Search and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
This funding also includes resources to launching a Fellows Program for teachers and alumni of a program to collect participants who attended the International Science and Engineering Fair and Intel Science Talent Search as a mentor for future generations.
